Much like anything ancient, to the modern mind it can seem like a load of nonsense. But when you bring something as transformative as Feng Shui into your life. The results are palpable.

So what is Feng Shui? Elke Fingleton, our guest for bite-sized wisdom on Saturday 6th February explained it to me as flow. That makes a lot of sense to me. It’s about getting your space in tune, not only with it’s geographical location, but also it’s internal landscape.

It’s a traditional practise, originating in ancient China dating back almost 4,000 years. The over-riding principle is that everything is interconnected by the energy of nature and when this energy is aligned life flows smoothly.

Based on Chinese astronomy, it acknowledges the effects of changing seasons and years by working with the prevailing energy of the time. Done well, it’s a very exacting science, which involves a great deal of analysis and charting. An expert will create detailed instructions on how best to configure the inside of a house (or the outside if you’re lucky enough to be building one!) so that the energy flows well to help you live better.

In Chinese astronomy each new year brings the energy of a new animal from the zodiac. This year it’s the turn of the metal ox. How your year will turn out is a combination of the new year’s energy and its effect on the energy of your year of birth.

In traditional astrology the metal ox refers to righteousness, frankness, intuition, versatility, hard work and respect for others. The colours to favour are green and red. For prosperity a green purse is favoured. For health the outdoors, countryside or mountain and attention to taking care of the lungs (relating to metal).

‘ When you walk into your home that has good Feng Shui, you feel like your home is giving you a big hug. You feel connected to the natural elements, supported in all you do, and that no matter what is going on in the outside world, when you step in through your front door, everything is ok.  You are home, you are safe and you are free to feel and express your emotions.

Today we can use Feng Shui in all areas of our lives, our homes, businesses or any area within our life that we would like to enhance or create the feeling of support and balance.

It is possible for everyone to have Feng Shui in their lives, no matter how hectic your lifestyle is.’
