We’re all so busy am I right? Busy doing. Or busy ‘trying’ to do. Or busy telling ourselves off for not doing. Often so busy that we forget to enjoy what we have along the way. Keeping busy is definitely my superpower, who knows why I do it? Fear of stopping? What happens when we stop?

Have you ever thought about the journey? If we’re always busy focussing on the destination we miss being present and all that it brings. Our lives are, after all, just a series of ‘presents’.

During menopause our bodies and minds, our guides and support for our journey, change. We may become slower or tighter or less agile in lots of ways. There are so many positive and natural ways we can support ourselves.

I’m a relatively recent yoga convert, my early forays often left me in tears (a healthy emotional response) or feeling inadequate (comparison is not my friend!). It doesn’t have to be like that. I realised what I was missing was the journey! And maybe I was trying too hard.

Yoga is an awesome addition to any menopausal woman’s life and Petra Coveney is a wonderful example of a woman who has used her own menopause experience with yoga to create Menopause Yoga (MY) to support others.

Petra has over 20 years of yoga experience, is a member of the British Menopause Society for health practitioners and now teaches teachers and students her specially adapted yoga poses, breathing techniques and mindful meditation practices.

Her aim is to ‘educate and empower women so that they can embrace the changes in their minds, bodies and emotions.’ An aim, at Menopoised, we share wholeheartedly. Her offerings are steeped in research and training from the world’s best teachers to bring you tried and tested methods that work.

She says Underpinning MY is a positive philosophy: Menopause is an opportunity to take a pause in your busy life...to Nurture & Nourish yourself...to take time for Self Study and learn more about your changing body, mind and emotions...to look forward to the next stage in your life.”

Petra offers workshops to bring women together in community (at the time of writing online). Check out the line up here.

Her events aren’t just about movement but embrace all aspects of menopause health, she explains ‘You will learn yoga poses, breathing techniques and mindful meditation practises to manage your main menopause symptoms, and take away useful information about natural remedies, nutrition, ayurveda and medical approaches to HRT.’

Petra is a wonderful teacher and safe pair of hands. So if you’re struggling with your menopause we thoroughly recommend Menopause Yoga.

We caught up with Petra during our bite-sized wisdom series to hear about how amazing yoga is during menopause and experience some shapes for ourselves. You can find our chat on the menopoised instagram grid here.

What we put in is what we get out. That’s not just good nutrition and hydration but also movement and positivity. Here are some of our favourites reasons why yoga is a must for perimenopause and menopause.

• It’s natural, no side effects and you can do it anywhere, anytime

• Can help quiet the mind and body and reduce common menopausal issues

• Relieves stress and can support better sleep using breathing techniques

• Blood pressure may be improved through greater blood oxygenation and flow

• It can strengthen joints, increase flexibility and improve bone health

• Help improve fatigue

• Specific postures can be great for hot flushes and night sweats
